The final frontier may no longer just be space, as NASA turns its gaze closer to home. A recent report emphasizes the need for NASA to bolster its contributions to the study of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomenon (UAP), commonly known as UFOs.
A Call to the Heavens
Thursday witnessed a groundbreaking report issued by a NASA panel, urging the space agency to expand its role in the detection and study of UAPs. This call to action echoes a growing global sentiment regarding the elusive aerial entities that have sparked curiosity and controversy for decades.
Rebranding UFOs
The government, adopting a more modern vernacular, labels these aerial enigmas as “UAPs.” However, to the general public, they remain unidentified flying objects, or UFOs. But what’s in a name? The pursuit is the same: understanding the unknown.
NASA’s New Role
Aligning with the recommendations, NASA is not only reviewing the panel’s findings but has also introduced the new position of “Director of UAP Research.” The panel, an eclectic mix of experts from diverse scientific arenas, convened for its inaugural public meeting earlier in June 2023.
Highlighting NASA’s wealth of resources, the report stated, “NASA’s assets can play a vital role by directly determining whether specific environmental factors are associated with certain reported UAP behaviors or occurrences.”

A Glimpse into the Past
In a move towards transparency, the US government has been gradually releasing previously withheld information regarding UFOs. A landmark report in 2021 shed light on numerous observations, many stemming from military personnel. These accounts detailed UAPs exhibiting unparalleled speeds and maneuverability, all while seemingly defying our current understanding of propulsion technology.
The challenges in studying UFOs are manifold, ranging from societal stigma to the absence of reliable scientific documentation methods.
The Pentagon’s Position
Two top-ranking US defense intelligence officials, speaking at a 2022 congressional hearing, reaffirmed the Pentagon’s commitment to unraveling the origins of UAPs. The primary drive? Addressing potential national security threats. However, Scott Bray, one of the officials, reassured, “we have detected no emanations, within the UAP task force that would suggest it is anything non-terrestrial in origin.”
It’s worth noting that the last open congressional hearing on UFOs dates back to 1969, with the cessation of the Project Blue Book by the Air Force.
