Meta to Introduce Advanced AI Features to WhatsApp and Instagram
Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has revealed its plan to boost its use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram. In a recent Facebook post, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, announced the formation of a new team aimed at implementing AI technology in the company’s products. This move comes as AI has been gaining renewed attention, particularly with the advent of generative AI technology, such as ChatGPT, which is capable of creating realistic text, images, and other creative outputs.
Meta’s Chief AI Scientist, Yann LeCun, who has already made significant contributions to the field, including pioneering neural network technology that underpins much of today’s advanced AI work, will lead the new team. According to Zuckerberg, the first objective of the team is to enhance “creative and expressive tools” by utilizing generative AI. In the long term, Meta aims to develop AI personas that can assist users in various ways.
Text-based experiences, such as chats on WhatsApp and Messenger, image-based experiences like Instagram filters and ad formats, and video and multi-modal experiences are all areas that Meta is currently exploring with AI technology. The company plans to consolidate its AI work from different departments by creating a centralized product team.
Meta believes that the entire AI community, including academic researchers, civil society, policymakers, and industry players, must work together to develop clear guidelines around responsible AI in general and responsible large language models, in particular. It is still unclear what AI features users can expect, and finer details are yet to be disclosed.
