Hong Kong Records Record-Breaking Rainfall, Shattering 140-Year Old Record
Unprecedented Rainfall Disrupts Daily Life in Hong Kong
Intense Rainfall Wreaks Havoc in Hong Kong and Southern China
Heavy rainfall has caused significant disruption in Hong Kong and Southern China, leading to flooding, transportation woes, and widespread closures. Hong Kong experienced a historic downpour, with record-breaking rainfall of 70 millimeters in just one hour, according to the Meteorological Department. This extreme weather has prompted school and office closures, as well as the suspension of various forms of transportation, including train services.
Rescue efforts are underway to assist individuals stranded by flooding, with 83 people transported to hospitals in the past 24 hours. Landslides have also cut off land routes, adding to the challenges posed by the heavy rains.
The neighboring city of Shenzhen in Southern China is grappling with similar weather conditions, leading to flooding and landslides. Authorities have advised residents in hilly areas to remain indoors to mitigate the risk of landslides.
The torrential rains have disrupted numerous flights in Guangdong Province, marking the heaviest rainfall in the region since 1952. To address the situation, Shenzhen is considering releasing excess water from its reservoirs, although this raises concerns of potential flooding in northern parts of Hong Kong.
China’s Meteorological Department has issued forecasts for continued heavy rainfall in southwestern regions over the weekend and into the following week.
