Sindh Health Department Cracks Down on Absentee Doctors, Prioritizing Effective Healthcare
Over the past 17 months, the Sindh health department has taken decisive action against doctors who have consistently neglected their duties. In a stern response, 507 doctors have been issued show-cause notices, leading to 54 doctors opting for resignation, while 39 doctors faced termination after receiving final show-cause notices.
Addressing the issue of ghost or absentee doctors, the health department has been actively engaged from January 2022 to May 2023. During this period, they have issued final show-cause notices to 121 doctors, a move that demonstrates the department’s commitment to ensuring a dedicated and responsible medical workforce. A spokesperson from the department confirmed these actions, highlighting the significance of this campaign in maintaining the quality of healthcare services.
The government has noted the lack of enthusiasm displayed by these absentee doctors in pursuing their professional growth. As a result, junior doctors will be appointed to fill the vacancies left by the resigning and terminated doctors. To ensure a smooth transition, the health department has sought legal advice and guidance.
In a bid to gather comprehensive information about the absentee doctors, the chief minister has requested the health department to provide detailed data. The director-general of health services has been entrusted with the responsibility of collecting and organizing the relevant information.
The fear of facing disciplinary action has prompted some doctors working abroad to tender their resignations. According to a representative from the health department, 54 absentee doctors have resigned due to concerns over potential consequences, while 39 doctors have faced termination following the final show-cause notices they received.
The representative further clarified that these measures are aimed at revitalizing government hospitals and ensuring their effective operation. By prioritizing the promotion of junior doctors, the department seeks to replace those who have shown little interest in career advancement or have been negligent in fulfilling their duties. This approach is ultimately geared towards enhancing the healthcare system as a whole, enabling the provision of quality medical services to the population.
The Sindh health department’s proactive stance against absentee doctors sends a strong message about the importance of accountability and commitment in the medical profession. As these measures take effect, it is expected that the healthcare system will witness positive changes, leading to improved access to healthcare services and better patient outcomes.
