Pakistan Railways to Introduce Smart Railway Cars on Key Routes
Islamabad, July 10, 2024 — Pakistan Railways is set to launch smart railway cars on four major routes, marking a significant step towards enhancing the passenger experience with advanced amenities and improved safety features.
Modern Travel Experience
The new smart railway cars will feature Wi-Fi connectivity, ergonomic seating, and state-of-the-art safety systems. Initially, these upgraded cars will be deployed on routes connecting Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, and Quetta. The aim is to provide a more comfortable and connected travel experience for passengers.
Amir Baloch, CEO of Pakistan Railways, stated, “Introducing smart railway cars demonstrates our commitment to modernizing services and enhancing passenger comfort. Despite facing resource constraints, we remain focused on delivering high-quality and efficient services.”
Special Eid Trains
To accommodate the surge in passenger traffic during Eid ul Fitr, Pakistan Railways has announced the operation of special trains. These trains will run from Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, and Quetta, offering more travel options during the festive season. Baloch mentioned the possibility of fare reductions if there is a decrease in petroleum prices, making travel more affordable for passengers.

Broader Modernization Efforts
The launch of smart railway cars is part of a broader initiative to upgrade Pakistan Railways’ infrastructure and services. Recently, Pakistan Railways unveiled the ‘Premium Lounge’ dining car at Lahore Railway Station, offering a modern dining experience with a diverse menu. The Premium Lounge is currently attached to the Bahauddin Zakariya Express, with plans to extend this service to the Hazara Express.
Additionally, Pakistan Railways is acquiring 230 passenger coaches and 820 capacity wagons under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP). These new coaches are designed to operate at speeds of up to 160 km/h, reflecting the ongoing efforts to modernize the railway system.
