National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) to Install Intelligent Transport System (ITS) on Motorways in Pakistan
In a significant move to modernize the transportation system in Pakistan, the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has announced the implementation of an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) on motorways M1, M2, M3, and M4. The implementation is expected to take two years to complete.
The NHMP official made the announcement on Thursday, stating that the Motorway Police has signed an agreement with the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) through the National Highway Authority (NHA) to execute the ITS.
Eliminating Delays
This new ITS system is expected to eliminate motorway delays for commuters, making their travel experience smoother and more efficient. The official also stated that the Lahore-Sialkot motorway already has a fully automated system, where motorists pay fines and toll taxes only when they exit the motorway.

For example, it may be difficult to assign a challan (fine) when one vehicle is used by multiple family members. Unregistered vehicles with open letters are also hard to track down under the ITS system.

The official stated that an accurate and efficient ITS system requires a strong database. Despite these difficulties, the ITS system is a major step towards modernizing the NHMP’s transportation system.
Change in Issuing and Enforcing Challans
Road users will be able to pay the challan along with the toll tax, but the ITS system would change how challans are issued and enforced on Pakistan’s national highways and motorways in the coming years.
