The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has initiated formal consultations to restore student unions in higher education institutions across the province. The discussions took place during a meeting chaired by Higher Education and Local Government Minister Mina Khan Afridi, with officials from the Higher Education Department and student organization leaders in attendance.
Representatives from Islami Jamiat Talaba, Insaf Students Federation, Peoples Students Federation, Pakhtunkhwa Students Organization, and other student groups shared their proposals and recommendations. A committee was formed to finalize the framework for restoring student unions, headed by Insaf Students Federation’s provincial president, Musharraf Afridi, and including members from the Higher Education Department and various student organizations. The committee has been tasked with presenting its recommendations within 15 days for review by the higher education minister.
Mina Khan Afridi emphasized that restoring student unions is crucial for fostering democratic leadership and providing youth with meaningful participation in governance. He noted that the move would help reduce dynastic politics, feudal influences, and the dominance of privileged groups, while creating opportunities for young people to engage in democratic processes at both provincial and national levels.
