Pakistan has inaugurated its first-ever vascular hybrid suite in Karachi, a facility expected to drastically reduce amputations caused by diabetes, chronic ulcers, and vascular diseases. The vascular hybrid suite was officially opened by Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho at the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute of Trauma (SMBBIT). Dr. Pechuho stated that the Sindh government is committed to creating a healthcare system where patients no longer risk losing limbs due to illness. She emphasized that modern vascular surgery will significantly decrease amputations, particularly among diabetic patients and those with chronic ulcers.
Describing the vascular hybrid suite as a historic milestone for Pakistan’s healthcare sector, Dr. Pechuho also praised specialist doctors for their efforts in bringing advanced medical facilities to the country. She addressed the shortage of anesthetists at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Karachi and announced a specialized training program at Civil Hospital to fill the gap.
The health minister also commented on the rising number of dog bite incidents in Karachi, noting that local authorities have been informed and that stray dog population control is the responsibility of local government bodies. Additionally, Dr. Pechuho revealed that two new state-of-the-art trauma centres are being established in Karachi to reduce long waiting times, which are expected to improve access to emergency and trauma care throughout the city.
