Applications are now open for the Kyoto University Amgen Scholars Internship 2026, a prestigious fully funded research program offered in collaboration with the Amgen Foundation. Kyoto University is participating in the 2026 Amgen Scholars Program to support talented undergraduate students from across Asia by providing them with the opportunity to conduct advanced scientific research during their academic vacation. The program is open to both domestic and international students who are currently enrolled in undergraduate degree programs at colleges or universities in Asia and are eligible to study at Kyoto University as visiting scholars.
The Kyoto University Amgen Scholars Program 2026 allows selected undergraduate students to carry out full-time research projects at one of the world’s leading research institutions. Scholars will be placed in relevant departments or interdisciplinary research areas based on their academic background, research interests, and available capacity. Research fields supported under the program include biochemistry, biotechnology, bioengineering, bioinformatics, chemistry, molecular biology, neuroscience, immunology, medical pharmacology, microbiology, toxicology, statistics, molecular genetics, pathology, physiological sciences, and related areas in science and biotechnology. All placements are full-time, requiring approximately 40 hours of research work per week.
The internship is fully funded, covering all major expenses associated with participation in the program. Selected scholars will receive an economy-class return air ticket to Japan, free accommodation in Kyoto, and a stipend of 180,000 Japanese yen to cover living and daily expenses for the full duration of the program. The internship runs for eight weeks, from June 5 to August 6, 2026, allowing students to gain intensive research experience in an international academic environment.
In addition to laboratory research, participants will take part in a range of educational and professional development activities, including seminars, lab visits, poster presentations, and mentoring sessions with leading researchers. The program is designed to strengthen research skills, expose students to high-level scientific work, and encourage them to pursue doctoral studies in the future. It also provides valuable opportunities to build an international academic network and collaborate with peers and faculty from diverse backgrounds.
The program is hosted by the Amgen Foundation in partnership with Kyoto University, with participating graduate schools and institutes including the Graduate School of Medicine, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Agriculture, Graduate School of Energy Science, Graduate School of Biostudies, Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability, the Institute for Chemical Research, and the Institute for Advanced Study. The internship takes place in Japan and is open to applicants from South-Eastern Asia, Eastern Asia, Central Asia, Western Asia, and Southern Asia, including Pakistan.
To be eligible, applicants must be undergraduate students who have completed at least one year of study by the start of the program and must not graduate before the internship begins. They should continue their undergraduate studies for at least one semester or quarter after the program ends. Applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency if English is not their first language, meet academic excellence standards, and show a strong interest in pursuing a PhD in the future.
Applicants are required to submit an online application along with supporting documents, including academic transcripts, a statement of purpose, proof of English proficiency, and two recommendation letters. The application process is conducted entirely online, and all materials must be submitted before the deadline. The final deadline to apply for the Kyoto University Amgen Scholars Internship 2026 is February 1, 2026.
