AFC Asian Cup 2027 in Saudi Arabia Postponed to Late 2027 Due to Regional Security Concerns

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has officially moved the AFC Asian Cup 2027 in Saudi Arabia to a new window running from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028, delaying the 24-team tournament by nearly a year. The event was originally scheduled to be held from January 7 to February 5, 2027.

The decision was confirmed on Tuesday after extensive consultations between the AFC, the tournament's Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF). According to the continental governing body, exceptional circumstances in the region, including significant logistical challenges and travel disruptions, made it difficult to stage the competition as originally planned.

The postponement follows mounting security concerns in Saudi Arabia tied to a series of attacks by Yemen's Houthi movement, which have also led to the cancellation or delay of several major sporting events in the country in recent weeks. The AFC said the revised timeline was necessary to protect the interests of participating teams, officials, spectators and other stakeholders.

Under the new plan, the tournament will still be hosted across three Saudi cities: Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar. The updated dates will now be submitted to FIFA for approval. Saudi organizers had previously insisted that preparations were on track despite the regional security situation, and the LOC has reaffirmed its commitment to hosting the event, saying work will continue in close coordination with the AFC and other partners.

The AFC added that it will work with participating national associations, sponsors, broadcasters and other partners to limit the impact of the postponement and ensure the tournament is delivered successfully. The Asian Cup remains one of the region's flagship football competitions, and the schedule change is likely to affect qualifying campaigns, club calendars and broadcast arrangements across Asia.
