In a significant environmental effort, authorities in Faisalabad have transplanted 670 mature trees affected by the Metro Bus project to three designated locations, while work continues to relocate another 125 trees. According to officials, 367 trees were moved to Kaleem Shaheed Park, 166 to Bagh-e-Jinnah, and 137 to Dhobi Ghat Ground, also known as Iqbal Park.
Project Director of the Punjab Mass Transit Authority, Capt. (retd.) Zahid Saeed, visited the Tree Transplantation Orchard at Bagh-e-Jinnah, where Commissioner Faisalabad Dr. Imran Hamid Sheikh briefed him on the initiative. Saeed commended the authorities for choosing to relocate and preserve the trees rather than cutting them down, noting that the transplanted trees are expected to regain their greenery by next spring. He also encouraged other districts to adopt similar approaches for trees affected by development projects.
Commissioner Sheikh stated that officials are closely monitoring each transplanted tree to ensure its survival and growth. The transplantation process is part of efforts to mitigate the environmental impact of the Metro Bus project, which aims to improve public transportation in the city.
Separately, officials reviewed the progress of relocating utility infrastructure along the Metro Bus routes. The work involves shifting electricity poles, gas installations, and water and sewerage pipelines belonging to FESCO, SNGPL, and WASA. Project Director Saeed directed the relevant departments to maintain safety standards and accelerate the relocation work to keep the project on schedule.
Additionally, Commissioner Sheikh ordered water sprinkling along the construction routes every four hours in anticipation of the upcoming smog season. This measure is intended to reduce dust and minimize air pollution during the construction phase.
The Faisalabad Metro Bus project is a key infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing urban mobility. The efforts to preserve trees and manage environmental impacts reflect a growing awareness of sustainable development practices in Pakistan's urban projects.
