Germany Expands Student Visa Quota for Pakistani Applicants as Demand Grows
Germany has increased the number of student visas issued to Pakistani applicants, according to Ambassador Dr. Ina Lepel, who also urged stronger trade ties between the two countries.

Germany has raised the number of student visas it grants to Pakistani applicants as interest in studying in the European country continues to climb, German Ambassador Dr. Ina Lepel said on Monday. Speaking at the National Press Club during its "Meet the Press" outreach program, the ambassador confirmed that the visa quota for Pakistani students has been expanded in response to growing demand.
Lepel acknowledged that a surge in applications has at times led to processing delays, and said the German mission is working to streamline procedures and improve efficiency. She noted that applicants should expect continued efforts to make the process more predictable as volumes rise.
The ambassador described Germany as one of the preferred destinations for Pakistani students, citing its high-quality universities, research opportunities and welcoming academic environment. Her remarks are likely to be welcomed by students weighing overseas study options, where Germany's tuition-free public universities and strong engineering and science programs are major draws.
Beyond education, Lepel called for deeper economic and trade relations between Pakistan and Germany, observing that bilateral trade has not grown as much as the long-standing relationship might suggest. "I served in Pakistan in 2017 and have now returned as ambassador, but unfortunately there has not been significant improvement in bilateral trade volume," she said, adding that both nations hold considerable untapped economic potential.
She urged the two countries to expand cooperation in trade, investment and commercial sectors for mutual benefit. The call comes as Pakistan seeks to broaden its export base and attract foreign investment amid ongoing economic challenges.
On regional affairs, Lepel praised Pakistan's diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions, particularly during the recent standoff between the United States and Iran. She commended Islamabad's initiatives aimed at promoting dialogue and preventing further instability in the region. The event was part of the National Press Club's continuing program to engage foreign envoys on bilateral and regional issues.
