Google to Shut Down AI Coding Assistant Jules by End of 2026

Google has announced that it is discontinuing Jules, its autonomous AI coding assistant, as the company consolidates its artificial intelligence development efforts around a newer platform called Antigravity. The move marks the end of a product that was publicly launched only a little over a year ago.

According to the company, Jules will officially shut down on December 31, 2026. Users have until November 11 to complete any ongoing coding tasks. After that date, the service will switch to read-only mode, allowing developers to view their existing projects but preventing them from continuing work through the platform.

Jules was introduced in August 2025 as an AI assistant built to help developers write, fix and improve code. Unlike conventional coding assistants that require constant interaction, Jules could operate independently in the background. Developers could link their GitHub repositories, assign tasks and let the tool work on them while attending to other activities.

In its announcement, Google described Jules as an experiment that helped the company better understand how AI agents can support software developers. The company said the insights gained from the project are now feeding into other Google products, including Antigravity, which will serve as the unified home for its AI coding tools.

Google has not disclosed how many developers were actively using Jules, nor whether low adoption played a role in the decision to retire the service. The company has, however, confirmed the two key dates that matter for existing users: the November 11 cutoff for active work and the December 31, 2026 shutdown.

The closure reflects a broader trend among major technology firms of streamlining overlapping AI products into fewer, more focused platforms. For developers who integrated Jules into their workflows, the coming months will require migrating projects and adapting to Google's consolidated offering.
