The recently opened single-lane elevated U-turn on University Road in Karachi has come under scrutiny from motorists who are questioning its narrow layout and unusual design. The structure, known as KU Elevated U-Turn 2, was inaugurated on November 5, 2026, by the Pakistan People’s Party-led Sindh government, following directives from Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon.

According to TransKarachi, the elevated U-turn is designed to allow vehicles traveling from Safoora to turn back towards the University of Karachi without disrupting traffic on the main corridor. It is the first such structure on University Road under the Karachi Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line project, which aims to reduce congestion along the busy artery.

However, commuters have raised concerns over the single-lane width, with many taking to social media to express their dissatisfaction. They argue that the narrow lane may not provide sufficient space for vehicles to turn comfortably, potentially leading to bottlenecks and safety issues. The criticism centers on the driving experience and the practicality of the design.

The Red Line BRT project and the K-IV water supply scheme have already caused significant traffic disruptions on University Road, and the new U-turn was intended to ease some of that burden. Senior Minister Memon had earlier stated that the U-turn would make travel more convenient for commuters during the construction phase. Yet, the public response suggests that the current design may not fully meet expectations.

As Karachi continues to grapple with infrastructure challenges, the feedback from motorists highlights the need for designs that prioritize both functionality and user comfort. The Sindh government and TransKarachi have not yet responded to the criticism, but the concerns raised may prompt a review of the project’s design and future similar initiatives.
