Global oil prices dropped sharply on Wednesday, hitting a two-month low and slipping below $95 per barrel after Democrats secured majorities in both chambers of the US Congress, defeating President Donald Trump.

Brent crude fell 9 percent to $94.30 per barrel at the time of reporting, while US West Texas Intermediate dropped 8 percent to $87.35 per barrel. The slide marked one of the steepest single-day declines in recent months.

Equity markets mirrored the move in energy commodities. The S&P Energy Index lost 4.77 percent as investors priced in the possibility of changes to US foreign and energy policy following the election outcome.

The results have raised expectations that Washington may adjust its approach to the ongoing conflict with Iran, a factor traders weigh heavily when assessing global supply risks.

Analysts noted that Trump's political setback could push him toward military escalation rather than negotiation, a scenario that could tighten oil markets and reverse some of the recent price declines.

For Pakistani consumers and businesses, a sustained fall in international crude prices could ease pressure on imported fuel costs, though domestic pump prices also depend on exchange rates, taxes and subsidy decisions.

Market participants are expected to watch policy signals from Washington and developments in the Middle East closely in the coming weeks.
