PTA Reveals Pakistan's 100 Million WhatsApp Users Send 12 Billion Messages Daily
Pakistan's telecom regulator told a parliamentary committee that roughly 100 million WhatsApp users in the country generate about 12 billion messages every day, as lawmakers pressed officials over poor network quality and frequent call disruptions.

Pakistan is home to approximately 100 million WhatsApp users who collectively send around 12 billion messages each day, according to figures presented by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to a parliamentary panel. PTA Chairman Major General (retd.) Hafeez ur Rehman shared the data during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecom, where lawmakers reviewed the state of social media and digital communication platforms in the country.
The scale of the figures underscores how deeply the messaging app has become embedded in daily life for a large share of the population, serving as a primary channel for personal communication, business dealings and information sharing. The briefing placed WhatsApp usage alongside broader concerns about the reliability of Pakistan's digital infrastructure.
Committee members raised serious questions about the quality of telecom services, citing unreliable mobile networks and frequent call disruptions. One lawmaker noted that WhatsApp calls were being disconnected even in Islamabad, asking how telecom operators could be expected to deliver better service when users in major cities were already facing connectivity problems.
The PTA chairman acknowledged that there was considerable room for improvement in telecom services. He said the regulator had inspected mobile towers and visited 41 districts together with telecom operators to identify issues affecting network quality, signaling a more hands-on approach to diagnosing service gaps.
He also pointed to electricity outages as one of the main obstacles to improving telecom services, noting that more reliable power supply could significantly improve network performance. The comment highlights the close link between energy stability and the quality of digital connectivity across the country.
The discussion reflects growing pressure on regulators and operators to address service quality as demand for data and messaging continues to climb. With roughly 100 million WhatsApp users relying on mobile networks every day, even modest improvements in coverage and stability could have a widespread impact on consumers and businesses alike.
