Punjab has rolled out Pakistan’s first fully electric sweeper truck as part of efforts to modernise municipal road cleaning and cut down on environmental pollution. The vehicle was inaugurated by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who inspected the truck and was briefed on its operational capabilities by officials.
The electric sweeper will be deployed on the Lahore Ring Road for cleaning and washing duties. According to officials, it can travel up to 70 kilometres on a single charge and is equipped with a water suction system that removes standing water from road surfaces — a feature being introduced in Pakistan for the first time.
The truck runs on zero-emission technology and operates with minimal noise, which officials say will help reduce both air and noise pollution. It is also expected to help control road dust and improve overall cleaning efficiency compared with conventional methods.
Beyond its environmental advantages, the vehicle is projected to significantly lower fuel and maintenance costs relative to traditional road cleaning trucks. The provincial government described the initiative as part of a broader push to adopt modern, sustainable road cleaning solutions and make municipal operations more cost-effective.
The launch reflects a growing interest in electric mobility for public service fleets in Pakistan, where municipal vehicles have traditionally relied on diesel and petrol. Officials did not specify how many such trucks would be procured or the timeline for wider deployment.
