Russian Airstrike on Zaporizhzhia Village School Kills 24, Ukraine Says
Ukrainian emergency services say a Russian bombing raid on a school in the village of Komyshuvakha killed at least 24 people, including two rescue workers, with 27 others still missing.

Ukrainian emergency services reported on Monday that a Russian bombing raid on a school in the village of Komyshuvakha, in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, killed at least 24 people. Two members of a rescue crew were among those confirmed dead, according to the service.
President Volodymyr Zelensky, writing on Telegram, said Russian forces first dropped aerial bombs on the school, which had been used for distributing humanitarian assistance. He stated that after the initial strike, a repeat attack involving nine additional bombs hit the shelter where people had gathered.
"The Russians could not have been unaware that every week residents who have remained in Komyshuvakha were receiving assistance right there," Zelensky wrote, describing the strike as further evidence that Moscow does not seek de-escalation or what he called real justice.
Regina Kharchenko, secretary of the Zaporizhzhia City Council, said 27 people remained missing following the attack. Regional police said officers and rescue teams were attempting to reach residents believed to be trapped beneath rubble, while photographs shared online showed smoldering debris scattered across the area.
The village lies southeast of the regional capital, also named Zaporizhzhia. The attack came one day after the expiry of a six-day local ceasefire brokered by US first lady Melania Trump, which had been intended to allow aid into the embattled city of Oleshky in the Kherson region to the southwest and to evacuate residents wishing to leave.
The reported strike adds to mounting civilian casualties in Ukraine's frontline communities, where schools and aid distribution points have repeatedly come under attack. Ukrainian authorities continue search-and-rescue operations at the site as the toll is expected to be updated.
