The University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom has announced a fully-funded PhD scholarship in electrochemical ammonia production, providing an annual stipend of £21,805 for the 2026–27 academic year. The studentship, based in the Department of Chemistry, offers funding for 3.5 years and includes tuition fee coverage and a Research Training Support Grant.
According to the university's announcement, the stipend follows the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) standard rate and may be adjusted in subsequent years. The scholarship covers tuition fees at the UK rate of £5,238 per year for 2026–27, though the university has not explicitly confirmed whether higher international fees will be fully covered under this award.
The PhD project, titled “An Electrochemical Route to Green, Decentralised Ammonia: Advancing Electrolytes and Materials for Lithium-Mediated Nitrogen Reduction,” focuses on developing sustainable alternatives to conventional ammonia production. The research will investigate lithium-mediated nitrogen reduction and other metal-mediated electrochemical reactions to improve the efficiency and stability of ammonia production.
The successful candidate will study electrolyte formulations, electrode interfaces, material properties, and reaction mechanisms to develop improved conditions for producing ammonia using electricity. The project also offers training in electrochemical analysis, non-aqueous electrochemistry, materials chemistry, and advanced spectroscopic techniques.
Students will have opportunities to contribute to scientific publications, participate in research collaborations, and present findings at national and international conferences. The Research Training Support Grant can cover approved research expenses, laboratory consumables, and conference attendance.
This scholarship presents a significant opportunity for aspiring researchers to engage in cutting-edge research on sustainable ammonia production, which is crucial for reducing carbon emissions in the chemical industry. Interested candidates should refer to the university's official announcement for application details and deadlines.
