Pakistan has launched its first fully regulated ship bunkering service at Karachi Port, marking a significant step forward in the country’s maritime infrastructure and aligning operations with international fuel handling and safety standards. Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry highlighted that the standardized bunkering service will enable Karachi to compete with regional maritime hubs and attract global shipping lines seeking reliable and efficient refueling options. Previously, commercial vessels calling at Pakistani ports had to refuel in Fujairah or Singapore due to the lack of local facilities. The new system allows ships to receive marine fuel directly at Karachi Port through a controlled and internationally compliant process. Vitol, a global energy trading firm, has begun refueling vessels using its barge, while Cnergyico’s Karachi refinery supplies very low sulphur fuel oil meeting global standards. Karachi Port Trust officials noted that the initiative will not only increase vessel traffic but also generate revenue through port fees, marine services, and related commercial activity. The move is also strategically important following India’s decision to bar ships visiting Pakistani ports from accessing its own ports, increasing the need for comprehensive maritime services domestically. The Maritime Affairs Ministry emphasized that the launch adheres strictly to global protocols regarding fuel quality, documentation, environmental safety, and transparency. The first phase is conducted in partnership with an international energy company under certified procedures, with future expansion planned as domestic refineries increase their supply of internationally compliant fuels, potentially boosting foreign exchange earnings. The rollout included assessments of global bunkering practices, updated documentation processes, and consultations with industry stakeholders, reflecting Karachi Port’s ambition to establish itself as a leading regional refueling and logistics hub.
