Finance Minister Aurangzeb Says Job Creation Is Not Government’s Responsibility Amid Rising Unemployment in Pakistan

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has stressed that job creation is not the direct responsibility of the government, urging a shift in mindset in Pakistan away from expecting the state to provide employment. Speaking at a seminar focused on population growth, Aurangzeb highlighted the critical need for youth to engage in upskilling and reskilling programs to meet evolving economic demands.

He emphasized that rapid population growth and climate change represent existential challenges for the country, underlining the urgency of preparing the workforce for a competitive and sustainable future. Experts attending the seminar warned that Pakistan’s economy is experiencing a steep decline, with unemployment rising to a 20-year high of 7.1%, real wages falling, and the once-promising demographic dividend increasingly turning into a “demographic nightmare.”

The discussion highlighted that without creating a conducive environment for businesses and equipping citizens with relevant skills, Pakistan risks missing out on significant economic growth opportunities. Policymakers stressed that fostering entrepreneurship, vocational training, and innovative employment solutions will be essential to harness the potential of Pakistan’s young population while addressing the pressing challenges posed by demographic pressures and environmental risks.
