The Punjab government is preparing to launch a province-wide crackdown on littering and improper waste disposal starting January 1, introducing strict penalties to promote cleanliness and environmental responsibility. The initiative aims to deter individuals and businesses from polluting public spaces, waterways, and residential areas.
Under the new regulations, offenders could face fines ranging from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 500,000, along with imprisonment ranging from three to seven years, depending on the severity of the violation. Specific actions, such as burning garbage, can result in fines of up to Rs. 500,000 and up to three years in jail, while burning tires may carry a prison sentence of up to seven years.
The crackdown also targets the disposal of household or commercial waste in unauthorized areas, dumping into drains, and improper handling of animal remains, all of which will attract substantial fines and potential legal action. Authorities emphasize that the measures are part of a broader effort to maintain public health, improve sanitation, and ensure cleaner and safer communities across the province.
