The federal government has announced the extension of the electronic vehicle tagging system to motorcycles in Islamabad, marking the next phase of its digital vehicle monitoring initiative. The expansion aims to enhance security surveillance, improve traffic management, and strengthen law enforcement across the capital.
RFID-based E Tag readers are being installed at strategic locations throughout the city to support the broader system, according to a written reply submitted by the district administration to the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication. The project is being implemented by Safe City Islamabad in collaboration with the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) and under the supervision of Islamabad Police. Once fully operational, the system will allow real-time tracking and monitoring of all tagged vehicles, including motorcycles, across Islamabad.
As part of this initiative, multiple M Tag and E Tag issuance centers and booths have been established to facilitate vehicle registration and verification. The FWO has provided the technical infrastructure for the project, ensuring smooth system deployment and operational support at all centers. The tagging system has also been integrated with the Excise and Taxation Department, allowing secure, real-time data sharing across the network.
The installation drive for M Tags and E Tags began on November 14, 2025, and by December 7, 2025, a total of 63,329 vehicles had already been equipped with electronic tags. Authorities emphasized that extending the system to motorcycles will address current surveillance gaps, improve monitoring of vehicle movement, and further strengthen security arrangements in the federal capital.
