Islamabad has introduced its first pelican pedestrian crossings on Constitution Avenue, located in front of the Secretariat, as part of efforts to improve road safety and pedestrian mobility in the federal capital. The development was announced by Chairman of the Capital Development Authority, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, who said the initiative is aimed at providing a safer and more organized way for pedestrians to cross busy roads.
Pelican crossings are signal-controlled pedestrian crossings that allow people to stop traffic at the push of a button, giving them a dedicated green signal to cross the road while vehicles are halted. The system is designed to reduce accidents by clearly coordinating pedestrian movement with vehicular traffic, especially on high-traffic corridors like Constitution Avenue.
Officials said the installation marks a significant step toward modern traffic management in Islamabad, aligning the city with international urban safety standards. The move also follows similar initiatives in Lahore, where pelican signals are being introduced on major roads to enhance pedestrian protection.
According to the CDA, the new crossings are part of a broader strategy to improve overall mobility, streamline traffic flow, and prioritize pedestrian safety in the capital. Authorities have indicated that additional pelican crossings will be installed at other key locations across Islamabad in the coming months, particularly in areas with heavy foot traffic, to create a more pedestrian-friendly urban environment.
