Massive Garbage Piles Outside KMC Trigger Public Outrage in Karachi

A recent complaint about large piles of garbage along the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) headquarters wall has reignited criticism of the city’s waste management, after the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) declared the issue resolved—only for its own “after” photo to spark public backlash.

The complaint, shared on X, showed heaps of trash including plastic bags, food waste, and scattered debris, prompting citizens to call for immediate cleanup. The SSWMB responded, assuring the public that the site was being cleared, and later posted an update declaring the matter resolved. However, the image shared as proof appeared to show only partial cleanup, with litter and muck still visible, raising concerns that the work was more cosmetic than thorough.

This incident highlights Karachi’s ongoing solid waste challenges. The city produces over 14,800 tonnes of garbage daily, yet residents continue to report overflowing trash points, irregular collection, and weak enforcement by municipal authorities. On social media, many criticized the SSWMB for marking the complaint “resolved” despite the visible waste, underscoring persistent frustration over the city’s sanitation management.
