Pakistan’s aviation sector is beginning to show a clear shift toward cleaner and more sustainable airport operations as the Pakistan Airports Authority has started deploying environment-friendly electric vehicles for use in airport services. The move drew public attention after a BYD electric vehicle with a distinctive yellow-and-black checkered design was seen operating inside an airport facility, signaling the gradual introduction of EVs into ground operations.
Recent reports suggest this transition is part of wider efforts to reduce emissions from airport support activities while modernizing vehicle fleets used for airside and landside services. The initiative also aligns with steps being taken to develop EV infrastructure at major airports, including Islamabad International Airport, where the PAA has issued an auction notice offering lease rights for a petrol pump and an electric vehicle charging station along with related facilities. This indicates that airport planners are preparing for both traditional fuel requirements and the growing demand for EV charging as electrification expands.
Globally, airports are increasingly adopting electric vehicles for staff transport, operational mobility, and ground support tasks due to their lower emissions and quieter performance. International aviation organizations have highlighted that transitioning airport vehicle fleets to electric power can significantly cut vehicle-related emissions and support long-term sustainability goals.
At the same time, BYD is expected to strengthen its presence in Pakistan’s electric vehicle market, with reports indicating the company is preparing to introduce two additional EV models locally before the end of January. These developments point to a broader momentum toward cleaner transport solutions across both aviation infrastructure and the wider automotive sector in Pakistan.
