NEOC Issues Severe Cold and Snowfall Alert Across Pakistan

Pakistan is currently under a Severe Cold and Snowfall Alert as the country experiences one of the harshest winter spells of the season. The National Emergency Operations Center in coordination with the Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned citizens about extreme cold, heavy snowfall, avalanche risks, and road blockages in multiple regions until January 29. This severe weather is affecting daily life, transportation, and essential services, especially in northern and upper parts of the country.

The alert is issued due to an active western weather system causing prolonged cold waves, heavy snowfall in mountainous regions, landslides, and high avalanche risks. Disaster response teams have been placed on high alert to minimize threats to life and property. Northern Pakistan, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, is facing sub-zero temperatures, blocked highways, stranded travelers, disrupted power supply, and damaged homes. Punjab, Islamabad, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are experiencing strong cold winds and dropping night temperatures, while tourist movement is restricted in high-risk zones like Kaghan Valley, Kumrat, Upper Dir, Lowari Tunnel, and Shangla Top. Murree and Galiyat continue to experience freezing temperatures and black ice hazards despite temporary stops in snowfall.

Sindh is mostly dry with cold winds in coastal areas, while northern Balochistan faces extreme cold, frozen water pipelines, and avalanche risks. Recent incidents, such as the avalanche in Lower Chitral that claimed nine lives, underline the danger and the importance of timely rescue operations.

Road closures include multiple points on the Karakoram Highway and local roads in northern valleys, and authorities strongly advise postponing non-essential travel. NDMA and PDMAs have deployed rescue teams, heavy machinery for snow clearance, and emergency shelters. Citizens are urged to stay informed through official advisories, protect water pipelines, maintain emergency supplies, and use the NDMA Disaster Alert Mobile App for real-time updates.

The Severe Cold and Snowfall Alert in Pakistan highlights the critical need for caution during extreme winter conditions. Following official guidance, avoiding high-risk areas, and staying prepared can prevent accidents, property damage, and loss of life during this harsh weather period.
