PMSA to Deploy Drones for Maritime Search and Rescue Operations

The Pakistan Maritime Security Agency has decided to deploy advanced unmanned aerial vehicles to enhance monitoring and search and rescue operations for fishing vessels and ships involved in maritime accidents.

According to officials, the high-speed drones will be equipped with modern cameras and advanced sensor systems, allowing them to detect and track incidents caused by rough sea conditions, strong winds, and high waves. The UAVs will transmit real-time video and data to rescue teams, helping authorities assess situations quickly and coordinate emergency responses more effectively.

The drones will have the capability to monitor maritime incidents up to 200 nautical miles, or approximately 360 kilometers, from the coastline. This extended range will enable the agency to guide rescue teams during emergencies occurring far offshore, where timely assistance is often critical.

In addition to surveillance and monitoring, the unmanned aerial vehicles will be used to deliver life-saving jackets and floating rescue equipment to individuals stranded at sea, providing immediate support until rescue vessels arrive.

Deputy Director General of the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency, Commodore Syed Nauman Ali Baig, said the introduction of drone technology will significantly improve response times and overall operational efficiency during maritime emergencies.

The new unmanned aerial systems are expected to be inducted into the agency’s operational fleet by the end of the year, strengthening Pakistan’s maritime safety, surveillance, and search and rescue capabilities.
