Karachi’s newly launched e-challan system has made headlines after issuing a traffic fine to the official vehicle of DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah. The vehicle, registered under the Sindh Police at the Central Police Office (CPO), was fined near the Garden area while being driven by the officer’s driver.
Confirming the incident, DIG Shah stated that the Rs. 10,000 fine was issued for not wearing a seat belt — a violation accurately captured by the city’s automated monitoring system. He acknowledged the penalty and confirmed that it would be paid, adding that he has since instructed his driver to strictly follow traffic rules.
The e-challan system, recently introduced by Karachi Traffic Police, relies on surveillance cameras installed across the city to automatically detect traffic violations. Once identified, fines are issued to the vehicle owner’s registered address using license plate data.
Officials say the initiative aims to enhance road safety, promote traffic discipline, and ensure accountability for all drivers — including those in official or law enforcement vehicles. The system represents a major step toward transparent and technology-driven traffic enforcement in Karachi, setting an example for equitable application of the law.
