The Punjab government has approved a new traffic license points system aimed at promoting safer roads and discouraging repeat violations. Under this updated policy, each traffic offense will now carry penalty points in addition to monetary fines, creating a stricter and more accountable system for drivers across the province. According to the new framework, every violation will result in a deduction of two to four points from the driver’s license. If a motorist accumulates 20 points within a year, their license will be suspended for a period ranging from two months to one year, depending on the frequency and severity of the violations. Traffic authorities emphasized that this system is specifically designed to target habitual offenders and encourage responsible driving behavior. Offenses such as overspeeding and running red lights will result in a deduction of four points per incident, alongside the regular fine. Officials believe that connecting financial penalties with long-term consequences, like license suspension, will have a stronger deterrent effect than fines alone. The government expects this points-based approach to significantly reduce road accidents, improve compliance with traffic laws, and foster a culture of discipline among drivers in Punjab. The system aligns with global traffic safety standards and marks a major step toward modernizing Pakistan’s road safety framework.
