Pakistan has unveiled plans to build a new international airport in Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, as part of efforts to improve regional connectivity and meet the needs of overseas Pakistanis. The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has already started technical feasibility studies, which include identifying a suitable location and conducting preliminary site assessments. Construction is scheduled to begin within the current fiscal year once approvals and studies are complete. The project addresses a long-standing demand from the Kashmiri diaspora, particularly those residing in the United Kingdom, who frequently travel to the region. Officials say the new airport will offer modern facilities and streamlined travel options, reducing dependence on distant airports in Islamabad or Sialkot. The development is part of Pakistan’s broader infrastructure expansion strategy, which aims to enhance accessibility, promote tourism, and support economic growth in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Once operational, the Mirpur International Airport is expected to serve as a vital link connecting local residents, international travelers, and the global Pakistani community.
