Sindh Launches First Sensor-Equipped Scanner Stick to Support Visually Impaired Citizens in Landmark Accessibility Initiative

Sindh has launched a groundbreaking initiative with the introduction of a sensor-equipped scanner stick designed to assist visually impaired individuals, marking a first for the province. The innovative device has been developed by NED University’s Biomedical Technology Department in partnership with the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. The project is part of a broader effort to enhance accessibility and independence for the more than six million people with disabilities living in Sindh.

The smart scanner stick uses advanced sensor technology to help users detect obstacles and navigate their surroundings safely and efficiently. Officials have announced that the devices will be distributed free of cost under a pilot program starting this month, with plans to expand the project across the province based on its success.

In addition to the scanner stick, several other assistive technologies are being developed to support individuals with various physical and mental challenges. These include MindFoster, Binaural Beats, Neurofeedback, WalkAid, and EasyMobility — each focusing on improving cognitive health, mobility, and overall well-being.

This initiative reflects Sindh’s growing commitment to using science and technology for social inclusion, aiming to empower persons with disabilities through innovative, locally developed solutions that enhance their quality of life and independence.
