Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi has announced that Pakistan Railways is undertaking significant measures to modernize the country’s railway system, aiming to make it safer, more efficient, and passenger-friendly. Speaking to the media after inaugurating the Safe and Smart Railway Station project in Rawalpindi, Abbasi emphasized that major stations nationwide will soon receive similar upgrades under the Prime Minister’s vision for a modernized railway network.

Rawalpindi has become the first railway station in Pakistan to be equipped with a comprehensive monitoring and security system. The newly installed setup features 143 surveillance cameras, enabling continuous observation of the station, reservation offices, and surrounding areas. According to Abbasi, this system will not only strengthen security but also allow effective supervision of railway staff, ensuring smoother operations and enhanced safety for passengers.

Alongside security improvements, Abbasi inaugurated new lounges and waiting areas at Rawalpindi station, highlighting that similar modern facilities are being developed at major stations across the country. The upgraded lounges include dedicated waiting areas for families and women, tea and refreshment counters, free Wi-Fi, and ATM services, creating a more comfortable and convenient experience for travelers.

The minister also announced plans to replace older train rakes with refurbished models to improve travel quality. On the Lahore-Rawalpindi route, three train rakes have already been upgraded, with a fourth scheduled for replacement by mid-November. Renovation work at Faisalabad Station has been completed, while the upgraded terminal at Karachi Cantt is set to open soon.

These initiatives reflect Pakistan Railways’ commitment to modern infrastructure, passenger comfort, and operational efficiency, marking a significant step toward transforming the country’s railway network into a modern and reliable transportation system.
