The Wildlife Department has officially launched a nationwide registration drive for parrots in an effort to regulate ownership and protect endangered bird species. According to department officials, all parrot owners are required to register their birds by December 5. After the deadline, strict legal action will be taken against individuals found keeping unregistered parrots.

The registration fee has been set at Rs. 1,000 per parrot, regardless of species or quantity owned. The department emphasized that this initiative aims to curb illegal trade, ensure proper documentation of captive birds, and promote wildlife conservation.

The mandatory registration applies to specific species, including Alexandrine parrots, rose-ringed parrots, grey-headed parrots, and blossom-headed parrots. These species are among the most commonly kept as pets but are also vulnerable to illegal capture and trafficking.

To make the process accessible and transparent, the Wildlife Department has enabled online registration through its official website and the dedicated Wildlife mobile app. Parrot owners must provide accurate details about their birds, including species, age, and number, along with personal identification information.

Officials have urged citizens to complete the registration before the due date to avoid penalties and support the department’s efforts in preserving native bird populations. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to protecting wildlife habitats and ensuring that pet ownership aligns with conservation laws.
