The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has begun work on transforming a key stretch of Islamabad’s Blue Area into the city’s first car-free pedestrian zone, aimed at creating a modern, walkable urban experience. The Rs240 million project spans nearly 800 metres, from Savour Foods to Khyber Plaza, and is envisioned as a vibrant “walk-and-shop” district combining leisure, retail, and cultural experiences.

The new pedestrian zone will feature open-air food outlets, landscaped walking streets, and state-of-the-art digital installations designed to enhance public engagement and city life. The initiative seeks to reduce traffic congestion, promote eco-friendly mobility, and encourage a community-oriented environment in the heart of the capital.

To accommodate visitors, parking arrangements have been planned nearby, including space for 950 vehicles in multi-storey plazas and 150 additional parking spots near Khyber Plaza. For accessibility, electric carts will be available to assist the elderly, children, and those with mobility challenges, ensuring the area remains inclusive and convenient for all.

Large digital screens will display entertainment, public service information, and live event broadcasts, transforming the area into a dynamic public space. Once completed, the Blue Area pedestrian zone is expected to become a model for urban renewal in Islamabad — promoting sustainability, modern aesthetics, and a pedestrian-friendly culture in the capital.
