The INSAIT Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) 2026 is a fully funded international research program designed for undergraduate students worldwide who are eager to gain hands-on experience in advanced STEM fields. Offered by the Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology in Bulgaria, the program allows motivated students to engage in cutting-edge research during the summer under the guidance of leading faculty mentors. The fellowship follows the model of top summer programs at MIT, Caltech, and ETH Zurich, supporting future innovators and researchers in computer science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, physics, and engineering. Students work closely with research groups, contribute to ongoing projects, and may co-author papers for leading conferences.
The program provides a complete on-site research experience in Sofia, Bulgaria, lasting 8 to 12 weeks. Remote participation is not permitted, ensuring that students immerse themselves fully in the collaborative research environment and interact directly with faculty and peers. Participants become part of an international academic community while focusing on their research projects.
INSAIT offers strong financial support to all selected fellows, including a monthly stipend of €1,500 to cover living expenses, fully funded accommodation, travel expenses, and assistance with visa applications. This comprehensive support allows students from diverse international backgrounds to join the fellowship without financial concerns. The program emphasizes hands-on research, presentation skills, and academic development, preparing students for graduate studies and future research careers.
The SURF 2026 research areas include computer vision, robotics, foundational models, AI agents, natural language processing, algorithms and theory, quantum computing, AI for mathematics, and safe and trustworthy AI. The program encourages students from all countries, particularly those from underrepresented communities in STEM, to apply. Eligibility requires undergraduate enrollment in a STEM-related program, a minimum GPA of 3.5, and availability to stay in Sofia for at least eight weeks.
During the fellowship, students develop a detailed project plan with their mentor, complete research tasks, write a final report in the format of a conference paper, and present their findings in the INSAIT seminar series. Applications are submitted online and must include a current CV, an unofficial transcript, and a motivation letter outlining research interests and prior experience. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed online, and selected students participate in summer research projects between June and August 2026. The application deadline for the INSAIT Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship 2026 is March 8, 2026.
