How Pakistani Students Can Study in Japan for Free Through Fully Funded Scholarships

The Asian Development Bank–Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) offers a fully funded opportunity for Pakistani students and other nationals from ADB borrowing member countries to pursue higher education in Japan. This prestigious program supports talented individuals aiming to study at leading Japanese universities in fields essential for social and economic development.

The scholarship covers full tuition fees, monthly living expenses including housing, books and study materials, medical insurance, and travel costs. It is available for postgraduate studies in disciplines such as economics, management, health, education, agriculture, environment, natural resource management, and science and technology.

Eligible applicants must be citizens of an ADB borrowing member country, hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, and have at least two years of professional work experience after graduation. Proficiency in English is required, and candidates must be in good health and under 35 years old unless the Government of Japan grants an age exception. A key condition of the scholarship is that recipients must return to their home country after completing their studies to contribute to national development.

The application process begins by selecting a participating academic institution in Japan and contacting it for application details. Applicants must apply directly to their chosen university, indicating interest in the ADB-JSP. Each institution reviews and ranks candidates before forwarding recommendations to the Asian Development Bank. The final approval is made by the Executive Director of Japan at ADB, after which successful candidates are notified and required to sign an acceptance agreement.

Some of the top universities participating in the ADB-JSP include the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Hitotsubashi University, Keio University, Kobe University, and the International University of Japan. Intake periods vary by institution, typically occurring in April or September, with application deadlines falling between December and July depending on the university.
