Charith Asalanka Faces Backlash: Reports Claim He Pushed to Abandon Pakistan Tour

Sri Lanka’s cricket team is facing controversy following their recent ODI tour of Pakistan, with reports from Colombo suggesting that captain Charith Asalanka could be removed from his role.

According to international media, Asalanka reportedly encouraged players to consider withdrawing from the ongoing tri-nation series after the Islamabad blast, citing security concerns. Multiple Sri Lankan outlets claim his exclusion from the tri-series squad was a decision by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) rather than illness, as the board evaluates possible disciplinary measures. This development has sparked widespread debate and raised questions about team unity.

In Asalanka’s absence, Dasun Shanaka has been appointed captain for the remainder of the tri-series in Pakistan.

The controversy comes amid heightened scrutiny of the tour’s security arrangements. Following the blast in Islamabad, some Sri Lankan players expressed unease, prompting Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi to visit the squad at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. He reassured the team of “foolproof” security and emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to safely hosting international cricket.

SLC has yet to make an official statement regarding Charith Asalanka’s position, leaving the cricketing world awaiting clarity as the tri-series controversy continues to unfold.
