England fast bowler Mark Wood has been ruled out for the remainder of the Ashes series in Australia and will return home this weekend, the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed. The 35-year-old, who made a comeback in the first Test in Perth following eight months of surgery and rehabilitation, missed the second Test in Brisbane due to a flare-up in his left knee. The ECB stated that Wood will work closely with the medical team on his recovery once back in England.
Wood expressed his disappointment on social media, saying he was “gutted” that his knee had not held up despite extensive rehabilitation, injections, and medical treatment. His absence is a significant setback for England, who trail 2-0 in the five-match series, and highlights the challenges the team faces with injuries to key fast bowlers. Wood’s withdrawal also opens the door for Matthew Fisher, 28, who will join the squad as his replacement. Fisher previously won his only Test cap during a 2022 tour of the West Indies and has been part of England’s second-string Lions squad in Australia.
Wood acknowledged that the latest setback could mark the end of his ten-year Test career, which has been plagued by injuries, including an extended 15-month absence from the format due to elbow and knee issues. Despite this, he remains determined to attempt a comeback in the future, reflecting his resilience and commitment to international cricket. Wood’s career includes being part of England’s Ashes-winning side at home in 2015 and establishing himself as one of the fastest bowlers in the team’s history.
