Etihad Airways has officially announced the resumption of direct flights between Abu Dhabi and Kabul. These flights will operate three times a week—on Saturdays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays—with return flights scheduled on the same days. This move marks a significant step in the airline’s broader regional expansion strategy, with a focus on reconnecting key markets and strengthening regional connectivity.
Etihad’s Chief Executive highlighted that the decision to relaunch flights to Kabul is part of a renewed strategy aimed at enhancing access to regional destinations. He emphasized that this development will open up new avenues for trade, investment, and family reunification between the UAE and Afghanistan.
Economic experts have welcomed the decision. Mohammad Nabi Afghan, an analyst, noted that while the restart of passenger flights is a positive step, greater focus should also be placed on establishing a dedicated air cargo corridor. He said the current cargo infrastructure could significantly boost Afghan exports if better integrated with international logistics systems.
With an estimated 300,000 Afghan nationals living and working in the UAE, the country remains one of the largest hubs of Afghan diaspora and commerce in the Gulf region. Haji Obaidullah Sadrkhil, head of the Afghan Business Council in the UAE, stated that increased flight availability—whether to Dubai, Sharjah, or Abu Dhabi—will positively impact the Afghan economy. He added that Afghan products such as dried fruits and other goods can reach new markets more efficiently through the UAE.
According to the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation in Afghanistan, two domestic and approximately eight international airlines are currently operating in the country. Ministry spokesperson Hekmatullah Asifi confirmed that aviation services are being provided in a standard and structured manner, offering reliable options for both domestic and international travel.
Following the political transition in Afghanistan, many global airlines had suspended operations. However, the past two years have seen a gradual return of major carriers such as Air Arabia, FlyDubai, and Turkish Airlines. The addition of Etihad Airways marks another milestone in the ongoing recovery of Afghanistan’s aviation sector.
