Residents in the town of Emerald, located about 44 kilometers southeast of Melbourne, were left outraged after two individuals were seen wearing Halloween costumes that resembled the infamous white robes and pointed hoods of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). The incident occurred on Saturday evening and was captured in a photo shared on a local community Facebook group, quickly drawing widespread criticism.

The image, which appeared to show the costumed figures in front of the Emerald RSL on Memorial Avenue, sparked hundreds of comments after being circulated on social media. One local wrote anonymously in the Facebook group, "If you were in this costume and you belong to this page then you should be ashamed of yourself. No one wants to see this and it's completely inappropriate. Feel free to pack up and leave the area." The post has since been deleted.

Local MP Daniela De Martino, the Labor member for Monbulk, condemned the costumes in strong terms. "This is abhorrent and offensive — it does not represent our community and has no place here. The KKK represents hate, racism and bigotry in its ugliest form. I condemn this in the strongest possible terms," she told news.com.au. There is no suggestion that the Emerald RSL club or its members were involved in the incident.

A local councillor confirmed that multiple residents had contacted him to express concerns about the costumes being worn in several communities in the area. The issue is expected to be raised at a Cardinia Shire Council briefing next week. The RSL sub-branch was holding its annual Halloween event on Saturday evening, but the costumes were not part of the official event.

The incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding symbols of hate and racism, especially during festive occasions. Community leaders have urged residents to be mindful of the impact such costumes can have on others. Police have not reported any formal complaints, but the widespread condemnation underscores the community's rejection of such imagery.

The KKK is a far-right hate group with a long history of racism and violence in the United States. Its symbols, including white robes and pointed hoods, are widely recognized as emblems of white supremacy. The use of such costumes, even unintentionally, can cause significant distress and offend large groups of people.
