The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has announced the National Skill Competency Test (NSCT) 2027, a new assessment aimed at students enrolled in Computing and IT-related degree programs across Pakistan. Under the plan, participation in the test will be mandatory for all students currently in the 7th and 8th semesters of eligible Computing and IT programs.
According to the official announcement, the test is intended to measure students' skills and competency levels before they complete their degrees. Rather than replacing existing coursework or examinations, the NSCT is described as an assessment of the practical and technical abilities students have developed over the course of their studies.
HEC has tentatively scheduled the examination for January 23 and 24, 2027. The test will be delivered in a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format, and the commission plans to hold it at more than 100 locations nationwide so that students from different regions can take part without traveling long distances.
The requirement will apply to students studying at HEC-recognized universities as well as those enrolled at affiliated institutions, meaning eligible students at affiliated colleges will also be required to participate. The commission has asked students to prepare for the test in line with the program eligibility criteria it has outlined.
The announcement has prompted questions from students outside the Computing and IT fields, including those enrolled in medical and other professional programs, about whether they fall within the scope of the test. Based on the official description, the NSCT 2027 applies specifically to students in Computing and IT-related degree programs, and students in unrelated disciplines such as BS Cardiology are not covered by the requirement as announced.
Students seeking clarity on their eligibility are advised to check the full HEC announcement or contact their university's examination or controller office, which will coordinate registrations and logistics for eligible candidates ahead of the tentative January 2027 dates.
