US Senator Christopher Van Hollen, a Democrat from Maryland, has indicated that he is exploring a potential presidential campaign for 2028. In an interview with Fox 5, Van Hollen said he is not interested in becoming the next Democratic leader in the Senate and has instead been considering a White House bid. “I’ve made clear that I’m not looking to be the next Democratic leader. I’ve been kicking the tires on a 2028 presidential election,” he said.
Van Hollen’s comments come after Democrats made significant gains in the recent US midterm elections. He had been seen as a possible contender to replace Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, but his remarks have redirected attention toward a possible presidential run.
Born in Karachi on January 10, 1959, Van Hollen is the son of an American foreign service officer. His official biography confirms his birth in Pakistan. The senator has previously spoken about his personal connection to the country, saying in a message marking Pakistan’s Independence Day last year that he was proud to have been born in Karachi and described his bond with Pakistan as special.
Van Hollen spent part of his early life in Pakistan and India, attending Kodaikanal International School in Tamil Nadu before pursuing higher education in the United States. He graduated in philosophy from Swarthmore College, earned a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University, and later obtained a law degree from Georgetown University. He was admitted to the Maryland Bar in 1990.
If Van Hollen decides to enter the 2028 race, he would join the field of candidates seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination for the US presidency. His potential candidacy adds an interesting dimension given his South Asian roots and could resonate with diverse communities in the United States.
