Punjab Government Renames Lahore College for Women University Under New Law
A provincial notification has formally dropped the word "University" from the institution's official name, one of six public-sector institutions covered by the Public Sector Universities (Amendment) Act, 2026.

The Punjab government has formally changed the official name of one of Lahore's best-known women's institutions, dropping the word "University" from its title. Lahore College for Women University will now be officially recognised as Lahore College for Women, according to a notification issued by the Higher Education Department.
The department circulated the notification on October 23, 2026, to vice chancellors and rectors of public and private sector universities across the province. It sets out revised names for institutions affected by the Public Sector Universities (Amendment) Act, 2026, which the provincial government published in the Punjab Gazette (Extraordinary) on May 6, 2026.
Authorities said the change is purely a matter of nomenclature and does not alter the institution's mandate or its role in delivering higher education. The notification directs universities to take any further necessary action in line with the amended legislation.
In total, the revised naming applies to six public sector educational institutions in Punjab, though the notification focused attention on the Lahore college because of its long-standing profile in women's education.
The department has asked university administrations to adjust their records and official communications in accordance with the amended law. Further details on how the change will be reflected in admissions, degrees and official documentation are expected to follow from the institutions concerned.
