US semiconductor company Marvell Technology has announced an agreement to acquire Lumentum, a specialist in optical chips and networking equipment, in an all-stock deal valued at approximately $115 billion, including debt. The transaction, revealed on November 2, ranks among the largest technology acquisitions ever, surpassing Microsoft's $68.7 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard and Dell's $67 billion acquisition of EMC.

Both Marvell and Lumentum are key players in the artificial intelligence supply chain, and both have secured significant investments from Nvidia, the leading AI chip designer. Marvell develops specialized semiconductors for data centers, networking gear, and AI computing systems, while Lumentum focuses on optical technologies such as lasers and components that transmit data using light.

The combined company aims to develop faster and more energy-efficient connectivity systems for future AI data centers. As AI models grow in complexity and data centers expand, the demand for high-speed, low-power interconnects between thousands of processors has surged. Traditional copper connections struggle with bandwidth and distance limitations, making optical connections increasingly vital.

The deal underscores the intensifying race to build the infrastructure needed for AI, where data movement often becomes a bottleneck. By integrating Lumentum's optical expertise with Marvell's semiconductor portfolio, the merged entity could offer end-to-end solutions for cloud providers and AI firms seeking to scale their operations.

The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the coming months. If completed, it would reshape the competitive landscape in the semiconductor and optical networking industries, creating a new giant capable of challenging established players.

For Pakistan's tech sector, the deal highlights the growing importance of optical and AI-related technologies, suggesting potential opportunities in data center infrastructure and networking as global demand rises.
